ABSTRACT

IMPRISONMENT AS TRAUMA. THE DETAINEEʼS PATH TO REINTEGRATION INTO SOCIETY AND THE IDEAL OF THE PENITENTIARY INSTITUTION

The article presents the subjective side of the detaineeʼs rehabilitation process, including those aspects of the prison environment that can cause trauma and hinder the social reintegration of the released person. Various sources and studies were used to describe the current situation in some Romanian penitentiaries. The educational activities, the detention environment and the post-detention assistance were analyzed from the perspective of the reintegration into society of the person deprived of liberty. The arguments presented in this article indicate a discrepancy between the functional intentionality of the penitentiary institution (as described by the ANP) and the state of affairs identified at the level of social media in detention. The article advances a series of suggestions for improvement, which can help to synchronize the current prison performance against the European benchmark.

Keywords: detention, reintegration, Romanian penitentiary system, recidivism.
